About TELC-net
Network rationale
Large class size and/or a lack of material resources are challenges faced by many teachers and learners in countries of the Global South where teacher recruitment and infrastructure development have not kept pace with rapid increases in school enrolments. Investigations of (dealing with) large class size, lack of material resources and other challenges involved in 'teaching in difficult circumstances' constitute the focus of our concern as a research and teacher development network.
Aims
The Teaching English in Large Classes research & teacher development network ('TELC-net' for short) was originally set up by Dr Richard Smith and Dr Fauzia Shamim in 2008. The coordinators are now Dr Harry Kuchah Kuchah and Dr Prem Phyak. TELC-net has the following major aims:

- To share and disseminate good practices relating to teaching in large classes / teaching in otherwise 'low-resourced' or challenging circumstances in developing countries
- To theorize from such practices
- To promote further exploratory research and practice in such circumstances
Activities
Our activities have involved:
- Providing links to relevant sources of information and other resources (see 'Presentations' and 'Publications' for some links)
- Building up a comprehensive bibliography of recent work in the field (see 'Publications')
- Encouraging and providing a portal for dissemination of research by staff and students in participating universities and teachers/researchers elsewhere, including research carried out in existing country-wide networks
- Encouraging further research initiatives in the area of large class studies
- Developing a membership base via Facebook - as of mid-April 2020 the Facebook group has 3,550 members
